So you’ve booked your hotel, and maybe made a dinner reservation or two – but now you need to fill your days with family-friendly fun and activities that are sure to please everyone. Let us help with some of our favorite Newport traditions…
Boots on the Ground Memorial at Fort Adams – From Friday May 27 to Monday May 30th, stop by Fort Adams State Park starting at 8 AM. Saturday from 5-6 PM there will be a patriotic concert featuring the 88th Army band, Rhode Island National Guard. Admission to the memorial is free.
Sunset champagne sail or morning mimosa sail – Our favorite cruises are with Classic Cruises of Newport and Sightsailing! Grab tickets online or visit them on the wharf.
A cocktail and snacks at Castle Hill Lawn – with remarkable views, raw bar and tons of Adirondack Chairs, all you need to bring is good company and a blanket!
Rail Explorers – If your day allows you to venture out to Portsmouth, hop on the Rail Explorers where you will take in scenic trails and get your heart rate up at the same time!
Bit Players – Not recommended for the little ones, this late-night improv comedy show happens at the Firehouse Theater in Newport. If you’re looking for a laugh, be sure to grab your tickets.
Visit a rooftop bar! – The Vanderbilt, The Brenton or The Top of Newport at Hotel Viking are all fabulous options
Spend an afternoon at Brenton Park – Rent a kite, grab some Del’s lemonade, bring the burgers and BBQ at one of the many grills located in the park. With wide open fields for running and playing, this one is a family favorite
Hike the Norman Bird Sanctuary – For a small donation, this is a beautiful walking path in Middletown with sweeping views of Second Beach
Beach day – For those who like planting themselves in the sunshine all day, take a trip to First or Second Beach, where parking is pay by car.
Plan a spa day – For a more relaxing Memorial Day weekend, book an appointment at the Bodhi Spa for a message or try out their famous Water Journey. Be sure to reserve your spot before heading in!
Last but not least, enjoy some local shopping! – Newport is home to a wide variety of small businesses and local shops. Peruse the downtown area as well as Bowen’s Wharf – and grab your caffeine fix at Empire (conveniently located on Broadway and Bellevue!)
We hope we’ve given you enough inspiration to plan a Memorial Day Weekend that has a little something for every member of the family! Our last recommendation? Prepare yourself for extra traffic on holiday weekends, give yourself a few extra minutes to get to reservations and be prepared for they hustle and bustle of the summer season!
